Guildsmen from 23.5 % (12 out of 51) of the States won 67 % of the available college scholarship awards and 67 % of the total available scholarship money over the life of the program (1930 to 1968).
Due to their competitiveness, 7 of the 12 states had been upgraded in 1960-61 when some Single states became Regions (R) representing 100% of those worthy of this change.
8 of the 12 States came from the top 10 most populous States in the Union at the time (1960 Census).
The most successful States were the Great Lake States (MN, MI. IL, IN, OH, PA, NY, , PA, NY) MI), West Coast States (CA, WA), one South Eastern State (FL), one Heartland State (MO) and one North Eastern State (MA). 5 out of the 12 States (IL, PA, NY, OH and MI) were considered primary industrial States (before 1980).
Michigan youths might have benefited from “Favorite Son” status, but this would be contrary to ALL Guild model Judging was conducted anonymously. Despite Michigan’s population being one-half the size of the two most populous States – California and New York, they still earned 1.5 X’s to 3 X’s more awards, respectively.
